The French composer Albéric Magnard, born in Paris in 1865, is probably most remembered for having died defending his own house during the Great War. He studied with both Massenet and d'Indy and is associated with César Franck's circle, though he also had leanings towards Wagner and Bruckner. His real genius as a composer, evident in these weighty and very well-made symphonies, is at last beginning to be recognized. Thomas Sanderling, on his first BIS recording, conducts with deep consideration and impressive gravitas.
