Disc No: CD-1368 | Our Glazunov series has been a pleasant surprise in that it has aroused much more immediate interest than we had dared to hope for. Tadaaki Otaka and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales are, of course, a guarantee of both quality and commitment. But romantic music that is just outside the mainstream does not have a ready market. Justifiably, there is an infinity of recordings of Tchaikovsky but Glazunov has attracted relatively little interest from the record companies. The first two BIS discs of Glazunov symphonies have done remarkably well and have been enthusiastically received by the critics. In the opinion of Classics Today: "Otaka shows himself to be finely attuned to Glazunov's special sound-world and lavishes much care and affection on this music, leading the BBC Wales Orchestra in an enthusiastic and highly polished performance." The new disc combines the sixth symphony from Glazunov's maturity with his first symphony, which he wrote at the age of eighteen after only two years of music training. Considering his youth, the first symphony with its brilliant use of native Russian folk tunes, must be considered a tour de force. |
