He has served as conductor and musical director of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and is Chairman of the Jazz Department at Indiana University. Nominated both for a Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy, he was the third inductee of the Jazz Education Hall of Fame and has been President of the National Jazz Service Organization.
