Matthew Curtis studied piano, organ and musical theory with his local teachers, but as a composer and orchestrator, he is essentially self-taught. He began composing actively at about the age of 15, and it was while he was a student at Worcester College, Oxford (where he read classics) that his work, including a symphony, first began to receive public performance. On leaving the university, he moved to London where several of his works were broadcast by the BBC. His output ranges from short orchestral pieces in the British light music tradition to more substantial works for orchestra, chamber music, songs and choral works. His music, notable for its melody and orchestral coloring, reflects his conviction, increasingly reinforced by experience, that the possibilities of traditional tonality and form are far from exhausted and there remains a great longing for more accessible contemporary classical music among performers and audiences alike.
