Emil Sjögren (1853-1918) was an obliging and modest man, ostentatious neither as a person nor in his art. When he died in 1918 a book was written in homage to him, but since then his name has been overshadowed by other important figures in Swedish cultural history such as Tegnér, Geijer, Stenhammar, Peterson-Berger, Strindberg et al. However, when listening to Sjögren´s production, especially to the music now presented on the Caprice label: four CDs in all, including some of Sjögren´s piano music and his complete works for violin and piano (all performed by pianist Anders Kilström and violinist Tobias Ringborg), one is immediately struck by the refined and magnificent expression.
