Frederic Devreese is a special figure in Belgian music. His compositions are varied and eclectic - operas, chamber music, symphonies, concertos, ballets, orchestral suites, etc. - and this double CD released for his 70th birthday enables us to rediscover them. After an Overture for large orchestra, the first orchestral CD continues with his first Piano Concerto, a genre very dear to Devreese. A more recent work, the Valse Sacree is an allusion to many film scores which have given the composer his international reputation (with L'Oeuvre au noir, Benvenuta, Les Noces barbares, La Partie d'Echec, etc.). The second CD is devoted to the piano, an instrument which is both melodic and rhythmic, enabling a tremendous range of tones and nuances. The crossover between the two CDs contains the score of the ballet Gemini, which can be found in a version for double orchestra or for two pianos, demonstrating the multiple facets of a creative and original composer who is constantly exploring new qualities of sound.
