There is no such thing as ‘’Belgian singing.’’ On the other hand, Belgian singing has its representatives, usually beautiful and noble. Suzanne Danco, the distinguished mozartian from the 50s, Clara Clairbert, the portly nightingale, Jules Bastin, the debonair patriarch. And yet, however steeped in glory, not one of them has attained the notoriety- let’s call it- planetary that enjoys Jose´ Van Dam. Sometimes as viennese Figaro, sometimes « Golaud of the century », now an unpretentious singer, now a staggering wagnerian, Jose´ Van Dam is on all stages, with the greatest conductors, in the greatest concert halls, as the saying goes.
