When one considers the history of the waltz it is not surprising that it became, and remains, one of the most popular dance forms. It has given rise to many orchestral waltzes which are enjoyed equally whether passively or on the dance floor. Its origin goes back to the third quarter of the 18th century, when the Austrian Landler was danced with enthusiasm to music by, among others, Mozart. As this rustic dance moved into the ballrooms of Europe, it acquired a lifting beauty but also a reputation as a lascivious activity in which - 0 horror! - the couples actually touched each other. There was even a move to ban the waltz as immoral, but that is a sure way to enhance the popularity of anything. To a certain extent Berlioz legitimized the waltz by including it in his Symphonic Fantastique, and since then it has been welcomed everywhere. Johan Strauss II 'The Waltz King', provides seven examples in this concert. He wrote over 200 waltzes, and in the 19th century many other composers contributed to this art form in which chandeliers and swirling, glittering costumes are evoked. Waldteufel's Skaters Waltz is another example of the carefree gaiety created in the listener by a good tune in three-four time. But it is not all joyful forgetfulness. Sibelius took a different course, In darkened room an old lady lies dying. In her deledurn her mind travels back to happier days when, with her friends and lovers, she would dance her evenings away. Faster and faster her imagination swirls her round the dance floor; then, in the doorway, stands the figure of Death, come to claim her, The final notes recall her fading figure before she went back mentally to her joyous times; then the Valse Triste is over.
