There is no more versatile instrument than the violin. When alone, as in many of the Kreisler, Sarasate and Paganini, it can be made to sing and dance under the fingers of a virtuoso player and has been known to bring an audience to tears. Dinicu's dazzling Hora staccato, on the other hand, finds it in sizzling form as a dancing-master's show piece, while Rirnsky-Korsakov's famous insect began life on full orchestra as part of an opera. As a solo instrument accompanied by an orchestra, as in a concerto or in Saint-Saens's Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, it can be either in agreement with the orchestra or set against it in a kind of contest. Two violins, when combined with a viola and a cello, form a string quartet, and for this grouping composers have written some of the most profound and the most elegant music. The slow movements by Borodin, Tchaikovsky and Samuel Barber all began life as parts of string quartets and have been arranged most satisfyingly for string orchestra. Which brings us to the string orchestra itself. There are usually five groups: first violins, second violins, violas, cellos and double basses, and on occasion, if in search of outstandingly rich and deep effect, a composer might subdivide any or all of the groups. Even without special tricks like that, the string orchestra produces sumptuous golden sounds which have attracted many composers to write it. The full versatility of the string orchestra is illustrated in this programme, whether in the slow and thoughtful pieces by Bach and Massenet, the Irish folk-tune Londonderry Air, or the fast and furious display pieces. All are brought vividly to life by an American orchestra on top of its form. Robert Dearling Discontinued |
