Vivaldi's Op. 3 set of Concerti, published in 1711, spread widely throughout Europe and was closely studied by, among others, Johann Sebastian Bach, who was greatly influenced by them, an influence felt in many of his own concerti. During his studies, Bach transcribed six of them: Nos. 3, 9 and 12 for solo harpsichord, Nos. 8 and 11 for organ, and No. 10 for four harpsichords and string orchestra. Vivaldi's own scoring is for four violins (Nos. 7 and 1 0, the latter with cello), two violins (Nos. 8 and 11, the latter again with cello), and solo violin (Nos. 9 and 12). Thus, Op. 3 looks back at the concerto grosso style and forward to the solo concerto which eventually supplanted it. No. 7 in F… With its several contrasting movements this Concerto recalls also the concerto grosso and church sonata styles suitable for ecclesiastical use. No. 8 in A minor… A forward-looking work, modem in language and tautly composed, Little wonder Bach was impressed by its serious nature and impetuous rhythms. No. 9 in D… Cheerful and open-hearted in mood, this Concerto is a strong contrast to Nos. 7 and 8. No. 10 in B minor… With its urgent, hopping opening idea, this work creates enormous momentum, interrupted only by the grand gestures of the Largo. No. 11 in D minor… Fine though the other eleven concerti may be, No. 11 is undoubtedly a masterpiece. The raw power of the opening paragraph, tellingly underpinned by cello, the pause for breath, and the driving Allegro would have thrilled Vivaldi's contemporaries. He then lulls them with a Siciliano Largo of melting beauty, only to stir them with a furiously rapid finale. No. 12 in E… This influential set closes with a light-weight Concerto hiding a haunting Largo at its centre. Robert Dearling. Discontinued |
