Disc No: CDBP 9790 | This fascinating and important release features recordings of several Vaughan Williams works, remastered from RVW’s personal collection of 78-rpm discs. RVW’s film music is represented by his suite from his score for 1948’s Scott of the Anarctic, featuring soprano Margaret Ritchie and here performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Ernest Irving. RVW conducts the Aeolian Orchestra in his 1925 recordings of the overture to The Wasps (inspired by Aristophanes’ play) and the suite from his ballet Old King Cole. Sir Thomas Beecham conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir in RVW’s A Flourish for the Coronation, written to mark the Coronation of King George VI in 1937, and Sir Henry Wood conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in RVW’s Serenade to Music, written for Sir Henry Wood’s Jubilee at Queen’s Hall on 5 October 1938 and featuring sixteen leading singers of their generation. Rounding off this superb release is RVW’s stirring Thanksgiving for Victory, with Sir Adrian Boult conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Chorus. |
