Boni’s Chamber Sonatas for cello and harpsichord stand as a unicum. They are fairly innovative, especially in the organic nature of their formal structure, derived from Corelli. Arcangelo Corelli played an active role in Boni’s transfer to Rome, as is witnessed by a letter in which the violinist assumes responsibility for protecting the young cellist in the eyes of an important member of the Accademia Filarmonica. The present work is one of the first collections of sonatas for cello and basso continuo ever to be published, probably the first ever realised with the technique of incision on a plate; but more importantly, apart from being the only work of Boni’s ever published in Rome it is also the only one in which genuinely first-hand Corelli inheritance is so clearly perceptible.
