Madama Butterfly marked Puccini’s first encounter with the exotic themes that were so popular at the beginning of the century; yet in this work the exotic, Japanese element blends with the intimist traits that the composer loved so dearly. In purely musical terms the exotic element in the opera is made up of an explicit use of melodies of oriental origin. Generally very scrupulous in his attention to the realism of details, Puccini uses no fewer than seven different Japanese melodic motives. The figure of Butterfly, indeed, towers over the others throughout the opera, whilst the other characters are lacking in any genuine human depth, mere unconscious pawns in the drama. Butterfly alone has an authentic psychological development during the opera.
