Countless times, the story about how Mozart’s Requiem was written has been told – maybe even too often: A mysterious messenger persuaded Mozart to compose a requiem that ultimately turned out to be his own. Mozart died, before he could finish his work. But what was the message of this requiem? Which view on the requiem’s content did Mozart write down in his score? This is the question that Enoch zu Guttenberg asks himself in his interpretation. He wants people to occupy themselves with the theological statements that text and tradition of the requiem contain, and which Mozart dealt with musically. No wonder that the answer to this question is very different from what can usually be expected from a requiem. For it is not the joy of Mozart’s “beautiful” music that the conductor is tracing down. “There is no pleasure in a requiem!” says Guttenberg. |
