Arnold Schönberg's ‘Society for Private Musical Performances', thriving from 1918 to 1921, encouraged the transcription of modern scores for chamber ensemble. Over time, this endeavour has proved of major interest and importance. As such, masters and students (the likes of Stein or Eisler) offered lightly clad versions of scores that the usual Viennese concerts had a tendency to ignore. Mahler's paradisiac Symphony n°4 and Schoenberg's sulphurous lieder op. 8 (partially excerpts from « Knaben Wunderhorn » !) were executed simultaneously in a significant concert in January 1921.
