In the 18th century, the 'doctrine of affections' was a means to imitating the text in a piece of music, and a tool known to every composer. A standardized way to express fear, anger and sorrow. Rameau considered it insufficient to compose with these stereotypes alone as tools; he preferred a psychological interpretation of the characters. Another thing Rameau held as a rule was never to bore the listener. To achieve this he did the unexpected, mostly by the instrumentation. Zoroastre used clarinets for the first time on a French opera stage. Also by using 'harmonic liberties' Rameau kept the listeners on the enge of thir seats. Dissonance at an unexpected moment, modulations and abrupt tonal changes were used. |
