In Medieval monastic and collegiate communities, the Compline Service was the last of the daytime services. The monks and clerks would then sleep for a few hours before waking for Matins at midnight. At the reformation the English Church compressed these services into two; Matins and Evensong. In the wake of the high church revival and encouraged by those who wished to sing plainsong, Compline has now been revived in some churches. |
