We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God, despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us from all danger, O ever glorious and blessed Virgin.’ The earliest known text of this prayer Sub tuum Praesidium confirms that devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and reliance on the efficacy of her prayers were already known before the end of the 3rd century. In A.D. 431 the Council of Ephesus concluded a century of doubt with the declaration that Mary was to be confessed without qualification as Mother of God.
