It is only in quite recent years that the significance of the full range of the artistry of the important Swiss musician Volkmar Andrae has come to be recognised outside of the interest of specialists. For many years, until his death in 1962 - several weeks before what would have been his 83rd birthday - Volkmar Andrae was recognised internationally as a gifted conductor, whose discographical legacy, although not large, was none the less indicative of the range of his sympathies and the depth of his musical understanding – often of works which, at the time, were not so highly regarded as they are today. |
