Francesco Tárrega was born on November 21st 1852 in the Spanish town of Villareal (Castellón de la Plana) into a very musical family. From an early age, Tárrega was drawn to the guitar, which he studied assiduously, concentrating almost exclusively on the instrument from the age of eight. Following his early studies and youthful appearances, in 1874 he entered the Madrid Conservatoire, where his broader musical learning included theory, harmony and counterpoint and the piano. Later, with his gifts more widely appreciated, he enrolled at the exclusive School of the famous guitarist and pedagogue Julian Arcas (1832-1882). From about 1877, Francesco Tárrega’s public career can be said to have taken off, his many appearances being greeted with the highest admiration – an acclaim that he maintained throughout his life
