Naxos | Anton Bruckner completed eight numbered symphonies, to which are add a further two early works (number 0 and 00) and the unfinished Ninth. Though they were to spend many years in obscurity, this imposing cycle of symphonies is now amongst the most frequently performed orchestral works. Throughout his long life he was plagued with self-doubt, a situation compounded by well-meaning musical friends who were anxious to help. The Third symphony suffered such adverse critical comment that he twice revised it, and later in life rewrote much of the work. This performance of his original score of 1873 show a composer whose and powerful music place him among the great musical innovators of his era. |
