Naxos | Largely ignored as a composer in his lifetime, Franz Berwald is now regarded as one of the most important Scandinavian composers of the 18th century. He earned his living originally as a violinist, and ended his life as manager and part owner of a glass works. He still composed a significant number of works, including operas, sacred and secular choral works, symphonic music and chamber works. Though his symphonies are now frequently performed, his fine chamber scores are less frequently heard. The Piano Quintets, which come from his later life, show the Germanic influence of his education, their strong melodic style and character being the forerunner of the chamber music of Brahms. |
