Naxos | Joseph Rheinberger was appointed organist of Vaduz at the age of 4. One of music's most gifted prodigies, the young man received infrequent music training until he entered the Munich Conservatoire at the age of 13. The music composed in his younger years, including a Mass written at the age of 5, was later destroyed, his first published opus being a book of four piano pieces composed at the age of 20. Early employment as a pianist and choral conductor was followed by his appointment in 1867 as teacher of composition at the Munich Conservatoire, a position he retained for the remainder of his life. He composed an enormous catalogue of music, mainly in the field of orchestral, vocal and organ works. Though much of his output is now rarely performed, his twenty organ sonatas remain in the repertoire, their bold virtuoso scoring placing them among the major 19th century works for the instrument. |
