Naxos | Largely ignored as a composer in his lifetime, Franz Berwald is now regarded as one of the most important Scandinavian composers of the 19th century. Originally earning a living as a violinist, his later years were occupied as manager and part owner of a glass works. He still found time to compose a significant number of works, and while his symphonies are now part of the standard repertoire, his fine chamber and instrumental scores are less frequently performed. Most come from his later years, between 1849 and 1859, by which time Berwald had despaired of the constrained approach to symphonic music in Sweden. He decided instead to concentrate on small-scale works that would have the possibility of performance, leading to a series of attractive scores that display the composer's acute sense of instrumental colours. |
