The virtuoso concerto came into fashion in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The brilliant tonal quality of the trumpet made it a particular favourite with composers, the most famous of the era, Telemann, Michael Haydn, Torelli and Leopold Mozart writing concertos for the instrument.
The whole object of the music was to test the skill and demonstrate the virtuosity of the performer. They contained fast and brilliant finales, the central movements generally quite brief, the baroque trumpet being less attractive in slow music. They still prove a fascination to audiences, the soloist walking a musical tight-rope in order to produce the thrilling effects demanded by the composers.
