The deep sense of nationalism that was sweeping across Finland towards the end of the 19th century, found a powerful form of expression in the music of a young composer, Johan Julius Christian Sibelius. In just one work, Finlandia, he had captured the whole essence of a repressed patriotism, making him into such a national hero, that his 50th birthday was treated as a national holiday.
In the international world of music, it was to be his magnificent series of seven symphonies that established a place among the great 20th century composers. They are all very different in content, as this disc will show. The Fourth, completed in 1911, is an austere and often cold symphony in which we can envisage the north of his country with its windswept baron landscape.
The Fifth has an outgoing personality, with a dramatic first movement and a heroic finale, framing a movement of considerable beauty.
