Naxos | The nationalism sweeping across Finland towards the end of the 19th century found a powerful voice in the music of a young composer, Johan Julius Christian Sibelius. In the space of just one work, Finlandia, he captured the whole essence of repressed patriotism. However, it was his series of seven symphonies that established his place among the great 20th century composers. All very different in content, the cycle culminated in the Seventh, where Sibelius integrated the four conventional movements into the one integrated statement. The Sixth symphony was completed the year before in 1923, the bleak wind of Finland constantly blowing through a rugged score. For a new production of The Tempest in Finland, Sibelius produced incidental music that graphically pictured Shakespeare's play. |
