| Naxos | Born in Hungary in 1811, Franz Liszt was a womaniser, extrovert, musical genius and the most famous pianist of his era. An infant prodigy that was composing and playing in public by the age of 8, Liszt was sent to Vienna where he enjoyed the best possible education. His outgoing personality took him into artistic gatherings, Beethoven and Schubert among the famous musicians he was to meet there. As a composer he was an enigma, often writing music intended to seek easy public acclaim, while at the same time creating scores that employed the most adventurous modern idioms. He was generous to colleagues, often making piano arrangements of their orchestral scores so that they would reach a wider audience. His imposing Bunte Reihe began life as Ferdinand David's twenty-four pieces for violin and piano, Liszt producing piano scores that combine virtuosity with passages of the utmost delicacy. |
