Franz Danzi was born in 1763, and became the best known composer of a German family of musicians, believed to be of Italian origin. An outstanding cellist, Danzi played in the famous Mannheim orchestra at the age of 15. Now is largely remembered for his delightful chamber music, Danzi is credited as being the first composer to develop the art of the Wind Quintet. Why he chose this medium is unclear, but he invested his works with a sprightly vivacity, virtuosity and good humour. His Horn Sonata is certainly unusual, being a brilliant work for keyboard with the horn in the minor role.
