Naxos | One of the most famous French composers of the 20th century, Francis Poulenc has the popular image of being an outstanding composer of religious choral works and colourful orchestral scores. Yet essentially he was a miniaturist with a prolific output of chamber and instrumental music, together with songs in varying moods. The sonatas for flute and clarinet are his most frequently performed works, the bittersweet melodies making the works so immediately attractive. His Sextet for Piano and Wind instruments, and the smaller-scale Trio, are sprinkled with Poulenc's wit and ready sense of fun. This disc is the first of a series covering his chamber and instrumental music. |
