Naxos | Gabriel Urbain Faure, born in France in May 1845, worked for many years as a music teacher, his career as a composer restricted to school holidays. A quite unexpected appointment to the Paris Conservatoire found him teaching the young Ravel, Enescu and Nadia Boulanger. An internal scandal, in which Faure supported the students, led to his popular installation as Director. It was to be this quiet man who took charge of the sweeping changes at the Conservatoire that took French music into the next century. His compositions reflected his calm personality, the catalogue of piano scores, including a number of works for four hands, having considerable charm and refinement. The best known composition in this genre, the delightful Dolly Suite, possesses the uncomplicated character of music for children. |
