Naxos | Sigismond Thalberg is one of music's most colourful characters. Probably the illegitimate son of a wealthy Count, Sigismond was brought up by Joseph Thalberg, though his true parentage and date of birth are unknown. He became an incredibly gifted pianist, and at the age of 14 was attracting attention as a salon pianist, his first works in this style published two years later. Considered by many as a technically superior pianist to Liszt, his concert performances, in common with other virtuoso pianists of his era, were devoted to his own music. A Piano Concerto was therefore essential for his tours, and this dramatic and virtuoso score came early in his career. Almost all of his output involved the piano, and to some solo works he provided an orchestral accompaniment when one was available. Schumann found much to praise in his music, the Nocturnes being among his favourite works. |
