Naxos | As wind instruments improved in the late 18th century, composers perceived their commercial potential, creating a new genre of the wind quintet. It has since become an essential component of chamber music, with major composers of the 20th century adding to the large repertoire. Paul Hindemith completed his Kleine Kammermusik in 1922, with the intention of sweeping away the cobwebs of the late-romantic era, while two years later the Czech composer, Leoe Janácek, brought a new sound spectrum to the quintet with his enchanting score, Mládí (Youth). The American composer, Samuel Barber, created a romantic mood-picture of a warm summer day, at much the same time as Sweden's Lars-Erik Larsson was taking wind ensembles into the abstract world of contemporary composition |
