Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov was born in St. Petersburg in 1865, his career as pianist, conductor and composer extending well into the 20th century. A Rimsky-Korsakov pupil, his vast quantity of music is characterised by his attachment to his mentor's use of exotic colours.

The First Piano Concerto, completed when Glazunov was 46, is regarded as one of his finest compositions, its brilliance and strong thematic material finding an immediate place in the repertoire. Seven years later, and in the autumn of his career, the Second Concerto captures many of the same attributes, giving the soloist ample scope for virtuosity.
Variations on a Russian Theme is derived from a combined effort by a group of friends called the 'Belyayev Circle', which included Glazunov, Lyadov and Rimsky-Korsakov. First written for solo piano in 1899, the composers orchestrated the score two years later.
