Naxos | Franz Joseph Haydn was the most important Austrian composer during the central part of the18th century. His early career had not been particularly impressive, but from 1761 he produced a series of works that remain at the centre of today's standard repertoire, whether it be in the field of symphonic or chamber music. His works for keyboard were equally important, and include 62 sonatas and numerous sets of variations, this latter part of his output being among his most attractive, yet less frequently performed scores. They demonstrate his inventiveness, the thematic material so skilfully used to create extended and highly enjoyable works. |
