Naxos | Imagine the time when you could only experience the great symphonic masterpieces if you lived in or near a major city where an orchestra was available. Publishers were quick to see that this restriction could be turned to their advantage and commissioned arrangers - sometimes the composer - to make piano versions of symphonic scores for use in the home. They also produced versions that could encompass even more of the original symphonic texture by using four hands at one piano. Brahms made such arrangements of all four of his symphonies, creating works of considerable brilliance and virtuosity. The First Symphony is here coupled with one of his lesser-known works, the patriotic Triumphlied completed in 1871, and originally scored for baritone, chorus and orchestra. |
