Naxos | Born to a peasant family in Bohemia in 1739, Johann Baptist Vanhal was probably the first musician to earn a living entirely from composing. He was a prolific writer to meet the demands made upon him for new works, and ascribed to him are over 1300 scores, including 100 quartets, at least 73 symphonies, 95 sacred works, and a large quantity of instrumental and vocal pieces. Such was his success that within a few years of his symphonies being written, they were being performed around the world. Though they were constructed in traditional form, Vanhal was often more adventurous than Haydn in his experiments with harmonic progression and development. |
