Inescapably French by birth and character, Jacques Ibert spent most of his life in Rome. Though his music has an unmistakable Gallic quality, it is also strongly influenced by the warmth and bright colours generated by the Mediterranean sun. Ibert composed in every genre, apart from oratorio, his outrageous Divertissement for small orchestra, with its depiction of a football match in the final section, attracting the greatest public acclaim. He was a master of orchestral colours, the ports of call, Escales, vividly capturing in sound five of his favourite locations, while the Bacchanale is a virtuoso showpiece
