Henry Purcell was named organist of London's Westminster Abbey at the age of 20, an extraordinary position for one so young. Additional appointments followed in quick succession, making him a very wealthy young man. Yet for one so famous, it is strange that little is known of a life that ended at the early age of 35. During that brief period he composed a vast catalogue of music, including three major scores for the stage; incidental music to 43 plays; orchestral works; 68 Anthems, and a vast number of songs and keyboard works. In the last year of his life Purcell was invited to write the music for a new production of Shakespeare's play The Tempest. The solo and choral sections create a semi-opera, and a work of musical substance, Purcell introducing an Italian style to his vocal writing.
