Naxos | Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov was born in St. Petersburg in 1865, and enjoyed a distinguished career as pianist and conductor that lasted well into the 20th century. He had been a composition pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov, and wrote a vast quantity of music, many of his orchestral scores becoming part of the standard repertoire. The Sixth symphony, which dates from 1896, is among his more frequently performed works, its dramatic outer movements and colourful scoring providing a ready attraction. Among Glazunov's highly descriptive tone poems, The Forest creates an atmosphere of heroic deeds and the dark recesses of the forest at night. |
