Naxos | Brilliant organist, composer, academician and cousin of Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Gottfried Walther was an important figure in early 18th century German church music. The two musicians were of a similar age and were mutually influential on their development as composers. Walther became better known for his writings on music, and published the first comprehensive dictionary of musicians and musical terms. He composed over three hundred works, 119 of these being keyboard pieces based on choral preludes. They included a number of concertos where Walther 'borrowed' music from Italian composers to create a number of solo organ concertos, their attractive thematic material providing works of considerable attraction. |
