Napoléon Coste was born in provincial France in 1806, and received his first lessons on the guitar from his mother. He was so gifted that he had already established himself as a teacher of the instrument while still a teenager. At twenty-four Coste moved to Paris, where his brilliant technique placed him among the great guitarists of his generation.

Sadly, an accident to his arm was to cut short his playing career at the age of fifty-seven, and in the 20 years that followed he added to his catalogue of compositions. It was music of an uncomplicated nature intended to provide instant pleasure, while offering the soloists adequate scope to display their virtuosity. This disc explores music largely inspired by the popular dance rhythms of Coste's time.
