Napoléon Coste was born in provincial France in 1806, and received his first guitar lessons from his mother. He was incredibly gifted and as a teenager quickly established himself as a teacher of the instrument. Aged twenty-four, Coste decided to move to Paris, his brilliant technique placing him among the great guitarists of his generation. At the peak of his career an accident to his arm prevented further concert appearances. During the following twenty years he composed a series of works intended to provide instant pleasure, while offering adequate scope for a display of virtuosity. The Twenty-five Études offer a practical study of guitar technique, while proving an attraction in the concert repertoire.
