Naxos | Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky is the best known Russian composer of the 19th century, yet he lived a life of turmoil, the slightest rebuff sending him into a bout of depression. These mixed emotions are a key feature in much that he wrote, his symphonies, concertos and ballets more frequently performed than any other 19th century composer. Tchaikovsky also yearned to be accepted as a great opera composer, and spent a considerable part of his life to that end. Vocal music had fascinated him throughout his life, and he created a vast catalogue of songs that contain some of his most beautiful music, often drawing on the melancholy inherent in Russian folk music. |
