Throughout his life Dupré was influenced by the Chorales of Bach, and he set to work on a massive collection of Seventy-Nine, intended to be a 20th century view of the same sacred source. They were completed in 1931 and offer the beginner works that will fall within their scope, while taking them through to the most complex techniques. In attempting this massive task, Dupré often resorted to gestures rather than inspiration, some of the items being so short that they represent no more than a melody.

It was in the art of improvisation that Dupré most fascinated his audiences. His ability to create the most imposing works from a simply melody, which was usually presented to him just prior to the improvisation, was awe-inspiring. He was persuaded to recreate in published scores some of his finest works in this oeuvre. A Brussels recital in 1931 resulted in Le chemin de la croix, a massive work in 14 substantial sections, picturing the life of Jesus leading to his death on the cross. Each section is quite explicit in scene creating, many being of a very quiet disposition, and reaching a climax as Jesus is nailed to the cross.
