Though his duties as church organist restricted the time available for composition, Johann Pachelbel was a remarkably prolific composer. Though he never travelled from his native Germany, his pupils were to disperse throughout Europe, and created a school of composition that was to have a major effect on church music.
Today he is best known as the composer of a Canon and Gigue that has been arranged for numerous instrumental ensembles. Pachelbel's large volume of organ music, both secular and sacred, covered almost every musical form of the era, from simple Chorales to the more elaborate textures of his many fine Toccatas.
They retain a place in the repertoire, the lucid and interesting melodic content producing readily attractive works.
