Naxos | Niccolo Paganini (1782 - 1840), born in Genoa, gained international recognition for his phenomenal technique as a violinist, obscuring, to some extent, his own compositions for that instrument, many of which remained unpublished in his lifetime. The three-movement Concerto No. 3 in E Major is full of writing in octaves, double stopping and left-hand pizzicato. Yet, for all the pyrotechnic display, there are some lovely melodies, all ending in a lively Polacca. In 1830, Paganini gave the first performance of the Concerto No. 4 in D Minor. It is a more lyrical work than its predecessor. The soloist is given great freedom of expression in displays of bowed staccato and in the tearful Adagio. This three movement work concludes with a Rondo galante. |
