Naxos | Franz Joseph Haydn was the most important Austrian composer during the central part of the18th century. His early career had not been particularly impressive, but from 1761 he produced a series of works that remain at the centre of today's standard repertoire, whether it be in the field of symphonic or chamber music. His sacred choral works form an important sector of his output, and includes 15 masses, most of which were composed in the latter period of his life. Written at the time of the defeat of the Napoleonic fleet at the Battle of the Nile by the British Admiral, Lord Nelson, Haydn's 'Nelson' Mass of 1798 has taken its place among the frequently performed works in the choral repertoire. Twenty years earlier Haydn had composed a more restrained Missa Brevis, the important organ role gaining it the name Little Organ Mass |
