Naxos essentials | At the age of six Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart made his debut as keyboard soloist in Munich, and by the time of his tenth birthday he had composed a considerable quantity of published works. By the time of his death, at the age of thirty-five, his vast array of scores included 20 operas, 41 symphonies, 25 keyboard concertos, and 26 string quartets. The catalogue of sacred music is extensive, and includes a series of Masses, the earliest written at the age of 12. In the early 1780's Mozart embarked on his most ambitious project in this genre, the C minor Mass. Unlike most of his music at that time, it was not composed to a commission, but simply to fulfil a desire to write a large-scale sacred work. Though it remained incomplete on his death, the sheer scope of his vision has earned the work the title, the 'Great' C minor Mass. It is scored for two sopranos, tenor and bass soloists, large choir with orchestra and organ. |
