Naxos | Anton Bruckner completed eight numbered symphonies, to which are now added a further two early works (numbers 0 and 00), and the unfinished Ninth. Though they were to spend many years in obscurity, this imposing cycle of symphonies forms part of today's most frequently performed orchestral works. Throughout his long life Bruckner was plagued with self-doubt, a condition compounded by well-meaning musical friends who were anxious to help. He completed his First symphony in 1866, and drew an unfavourable critical response. Late in life he wished to revive the work, rewriting the complete score in 1891, and it was subsequently performed in this version. The original and rugged score is performed on this disc, and shows a composer with a vision of powerful symphonic structures. |
